About this piece
Sagas from the 13th century reveal that the first Viking to settle in Skóga was the warrior Þrasi Þórólfsson. He ruled the land where the waterfall Skógafoss now glistens like a precious gem.
Legend has it that he hid a chest of gold in a cave behind the waterfall. There it remained for centuries—until one day, a couple of local boys discovered it. They hooked a ring on the side of the chest to pull it out, but the ring broke off, and that was all they brought back. The ring was later donated to a church in the village of Skógar... and to this day, Þórólfsson’s treasure is said to still lie hidden behind Skógafoss.
