About this piece
The Northern Lights dance high in the sky while the stars sparkle in the night. A fragile hope sneaks quietly aboard the old wreck, as if it were holding onto a heart in the dark... a heart that seeks warmth in solitude.
Many of us carry darkness in our inner hold, like a rainy day in the heart. But any dark sky can suddenly be illuminated with hope... with a warm hand to hold.
This photograph was taken a few kilometers from Europe's westernmost point in Iceland's Westfjords. The shipwreck is the country's oldest steel ship. Today, the ship, called Garðar, lies alone in the dark and abandoned on a desolate beach. The sailors have left it, but its soul lives on forever. When Hans and Jobbe visited the ship to photograph it, it was so dark that only the stars illuminated the night. When Jobbe had set the camera and was ready to take pictures, they walked towards the ship. And at the very moment they were ready to be photographed, the sky exploded with the Northern Lights. It lasted only a few minutes, but right there, in that moment, there was more hope aboard the hearts than ever before. Light comes if we seek it. And sometimes, it takes a light and a lantern to see it.
