About the photo
A legend from the 13th century tells the story about the first Viking, who settled the area of Skóga. His name was Þrasi Þórólfsson. He ruled the area, where Iceland’s most beautiful gem can be found, the waterfall Skógafoss. According to the sagas, he hid a chest full of gold and treasures behind the massive waterfall. It was hidden there for centuries, until a few local boys found it. The boys attached a hook to a ring on the side of the chest and tried to pull it out. But the chest was too heavy, and the ring broke off. In the end, the ring was all, they brought home with them. Later they gave the ring to a church in the village… and according to the legend, Þórólfsson’s treasure is still hidden behind Skógafoss.
