A momentary lapse of control
An eternity of scars and stories to tell
About the photo
While the Icelandic midnight sun paints the sky in orange tones, this American DC plane wreck rests upon the black beach of Sólheimasandur. Keflavík Airport was an important US military base during the Cold War. Iceland’s location made it possible for the United States to monitor the Soviet Union’s Movements in the North Atlantic.
The plane and its crew was on their way from the port city of Höfn to Keflavík. But shortly after take off, something went terribly wrong. The captain realized, he had to do an emergency landing. But turbulence and fog made it nearly impossible for him to locate a spot to do so, and it was not until the very last moment, he spotted the black beach below them. He made his maneuver here – just nineteen feet from the ocean. To this very day no one really knows why the plane nearly crashed. But the entire crew walked unharmed from the scene – only with the scars on their souls.
