About this Work
“Spine & Shield” is a sculptural piece that revolves around strength, resistance, and unity in a time marked by unrest and upheaval.
A single metal plate rises from a massive base. Rusted and bare, it bears its marks like memories – traces of standing tall, again and again.
The steel plate symbolizes the individual: visible, vulnerable, yet unshakable. It stands tall and proud in its own weight, supported by the firm grip of the concrete – a foundation built on community and grounding. Together, they form a shield. A place to stand.
The work speaks to experiences of protecting oneself and others, of setting boundaries while remaining open. It is an image of insistence – as a person, as a minority, as a community.
Holding on to dignity, even when the surroundings begin to crack.
The piece’s simple materials – rusted steel and fiber concrete – contain a rawness that contrasts with its message of hope. Even the hardest surface contains cracks, and it is precisely here that light finds its way in.
“Spine & Shield” is a reminder that we do not stand alone – and that strength is often found in quiet, steely presence.
