About this piece
Beneath the midnight sun in southern Iceland lies the wreckage of an American DC aircraft. During the Cold War, Keflavík Airport served as a strategically important military base for the United States, from which they could monitor Soviet movements in the Atlantic.
The aircraft and its crew were en route from the harbour town of Höfn to Keflavík, but something went terribly wrong along the way. Shortly after takeoff, the captain realized he had to make an emergency landing. Due to dense, turbulent fog, he was unable to navigate, and it wasn’t until the very last moment that he spotted the beach—just six meters from the ocean—where he managed to land. To this day, it remains unclear what caused the near-disaster. The entire crew survived unharmed—though undoubtedly left with a lasting scar on the soul.
